Claranor’s Decontamination Solutions for the Pharmaceutical Industry at A3P 2026

Pharmaceutical Industry: How Can You Optimize Your Decontamination Processes?

Claranor took part in the 37th A3P International Congress, held from October 13 to 15, 2026, in Biarritz, France. This year’s event focused on three key topics: cleanroom control, sterilization processes, and combination products.

These challenges are directly related to the issues of material transfer and microbiological control encountered in sterile pharmaceutical environments.

At the event, Christophe Riedel, CEO of Claranor, presented the decontamination solutions developed to treat packaging and materials before they are introduced into controlled environments.

Based on pulsed light and UV technologies, these solutions enable rapid surface treatment without the use of chemicals or leaving any residues.

Why use pulsed light in the pharmaceutical industry?

Decontaminating secondary packaging, tubs, films, pouches, and other materials transferred to a cleanroom must meet high standards of performance, process control, and repeatability.

Pulsed light offers a physical alternative to chemical-based processes. High-intensity light flashes of very short duration effectively treat microorganisms on surfaces.

Depending on the application, Claranor solutions deliver:

  • fast treatment, ranging from a few seconds to less than a minute;
  • up to 6-log reduction on select reference microorganisms;
  • a non-thermal process suitable for heat-sensitive materials;
  • a chemical-free and residue-free treatment;
  • low energy consumption due to the brevity of the process.

Pass Box: a solution for small-batch transfers

For small batches or introducing materials into an isolator, a Pass Box enables decontamination directly during transfer.

The Claranor system is designed to treat materials between two zones with different cleanliness levels. The cycle can be completed in less than a minute, without chemical disinfectants, water, or residues.

Its self-decontaminating chamber and design adapted to controlled environments allow for integration into various pharmaceutical setups.

The Pass Box thus provides a solution for transfer applications where fast, chemical-free treatment is required

Tubs used for packaging RTU syringes, vials, or cartridges require rigorous contamination control prior to introduction into an aseptic filling line.

To address this requirement, the RTDS2 robotic system – developed in collaboration with Steriline, integrates Claranor’s pulsed light solution to treat all sides of the tub.

The process achieves a 6-log reduction on Bacillus pumilus, with a speed of up to 2 tubs per minute. The system can be integrated into a VHP-decontaminable isolator.

The system design also meets the operational constraints of pharmaceutical environments:

  • Process parameter traceability and flash monitoring
  • Light intensity measurement
  • Lamp and reflector access from outside the chamber
  • Simplified lamp replacement
  • Power electronics integrated into an interchangeable rack

This design facilitates process monitoring and maintenance operations while minimizing interventions within the controlled area.

Decontamination tunnels

Solutions for decontaminating various materials prior to entry into cleanrooms

Claranor offers pulsed light decontamination tunnels, in semi-automatic or automatic configurations, to integrate treatment directly into the transfer process.

In particular, they can be used to treat bags, trays, and other materials prior to entry into cleanroom zones.

The system features a laminar flow along the entire length of the tunnel. Depending on the configuration, it achieves a high level of decontamination reference microorganisms, with a capacity of up to 4 pouches or trays per minute.

The treatment thus combines transfer, automation, and decontamination within a single unit.

Films, multilayer laminates, and pouches may require treatment prior to introduction into a controlled environment.

Pulsed light allows these materials to be treated on single or double sides through a fast, non-thermal process. Depending on the configuration, Claranor equipment can reach speeds of up to 20 m/min and achieve up to a 4-log reduction on target reference microorganisms.

This solution accommodates constraints related to heat-sensitive materials while avoiding chemical agents. Furthermore, it features low energy consumption and a reduced carbon footprint, delivering a competitive TCO compared to UV, chemical, or gamma irradiation solutions.

In this setup, pulsed light treats the outside of the bag, providing rapid decontamination fully integrated into the transfer process.

  • Speed: 3 tubs/min
  • Bag dimensions: 385 × 400 × 120 mm
  • 3-log reduction on Aspergillus brasiliensis

An example application involves the decontamination of a multi-layer bag – in this case, a 3-ply bag containing empty vials – prior to transfer from a Grade D zone to a Grade B zone.

For this application, low-pressure UV-C technology was selected based on the targeted microorganisms.

This solution offers an alternative to hydrogen peroxide decontamination and enables rapid transfer of secondary packaging:

  • Speed: 2 bags/min
  • Low-pressure UV-C
  • 4-log reduction on E. coli, S. aureus, and P. aeruginosa
